Capital F in Cursive
Capital F is assembled from three pieces: a stem that curls at the bottom, a wavy cap across the top, and a short crossbar. The stem and cap are the same pieces used for capital T.
Capital F stroke steps
- Start at the top line and slant down to the baseline.
- Curl the bottom of the stem a little to the left into a small hook.
- Lift, then draw the cap as a gentle wave across the top so it meets the stem.
- Lift again and add a short crossbar through the stem near the midline.
- Start the next letter on its own, close to the stem. Most school charts do not join capital F.
Some charts draw the cap first; the result is the same if the parts meet.
Capital F vs capital T
In common American school cursive, F and T share the same stem and cap, so only the crossbar separates them. If it is faint, too short, or pushed up toward the cap, Frank turns into Trank. Older copybook styles curl the cap more, but the crossbar still decides.
Common capital F mistakes
- A cap floating above the stem with a gap.
- A straight stem with no bottom curl, like a printed F.
- A crossbar so high it merges into the cap.
- Forcing a connector out of the bottom hook.
Lowercase f in Cursive
Lowercase f is a loop letter that fills all three zones: an upper loop to the top line, a stem through the x-height, and a lower loop below the baseline. That lower loop closes forward, on the right of the stem, the opposite way from g, j, and y.
Lowercase f stroke steps
- Undercurve from the baseline up to the top line.
- Loop back to the left, like the top of l, and come straight down.
- Keep the slant through the baseline to the descender line.
- Swing forward and up so the lower loop closes against the stem at the baseline.
- Leave with an undercurve toward the midline.
f vs l, b, and j
The top of f matches l, and b starts with the same loop, so the bottom half carries the meaning: l stops at the baseline, b ends with a small tie at the midline, and f keeps going. Below the line, j swings back to the left; f closes on the right.
Common lowercase f mistakes
- Adding a printed crossbar. Cursive f has none.
- Squeezing the upper loop into a single line.
- Stopping at the baseline, which leaves an l.
- Closing the lower loop away from the baseline, so the exit starts at the wrong height.
Joining f to other letters
f enters and leaves at the baseline, so most joins are easy. The hard ones come from a high bridge, go into oval letters, or double the f.
of
o ends with a bridge at the midline. Climb from there straight to the top line. If the stroke dips first, the word looks like oel.
fa, fo (far, before)
After closing the lower loop, carry the exit up to the midline and curve back over before drawing the oval, or far can read as fur.
off, coffee
Two f's mean four loops in a small space. Keep the stems parallel so the lower loops do not tangle.
ft (after, soft)
Stop the t well below the top line, and when the word is done, cross only the t.
fr (from, friend)
Carry the exit a little above the midline to form the small peak that starts cursive r.

Does lowercase f in cursive have a crossbar?
No. In school cursive the lower loop below the baseline takes the place of the printed crossbar. Adding one is a print habit that makes f look like a crossed t.
Why does my cursive capital F look like a T?
Capital F and capital T share the same stem and cap in most school models. The short crossbar near the midline is the only difference, so if it is missing or drawn too high, readers see a T.
Should capital F connect to the next letter?
In most school charts it does not. Start the next letter close to the stem. Some signature styles run the crossbar into the next letter, which is fine if spacing stays even.
Which way does the lower loop of cursive f go?
Forward. In the common American school model it closes on the right side of the stem at the baseline, while g, j, and y loop back to the left.
