Capital Z in cursive
In many American school models, capital Z is a tall lowercase z: a curved top like a 3, a kink at the baseline, and a loop below. The loop's upswing joins the next letter.
Capital Z stroke steps
- Start just below the top line with a small upward curve to the right.
- Curve over and slant down toward the baseline.
- Make a small overcurve at the baseline, a little bump or turn.
- Curve down below the baseline and loop back to the left.
- Close the loop at the baseline and overcurve into the next letter.
Capital Z vs capital Q and the number 3
Cursive capital Q also has a curved top and often resembles a 2, but it sits on the baseline with a short tail. Z drops below the line. Without its loop, Z passes for a slanted 3.
Common capital Z mistakes
- Writing a print Z in front of cursive lowercase.
- Skipping the baseline turn, so the top runs straight into the loop.
- A loop so wide that it drifts under the next letter.
Lowercase z in cursive
Lowercase z is the one letter where two very different forms are both common. Pick one and use it consistently; mixing them within a page looks like two different letters.
The looped school z
An overcurve letter with a descender, taught in most American programs. Steps: overcurve up to the midline, slant down to the baseline, make a small overcurve turn, curve down below the line, loop back to the left, close at the baseline, and overcurve out. The top stays in the x-height band.
The flat z
Closer to the printed letter: a short top stroke, a diagonal down to the left, and a bottom stroke along the baseline that becomes the exit. It has no descender. You will see it in many adult hands, in UK and European joined styles, and in several script fonts.
z vs y vs g
The looped z shares its lower loop with y and g. The body is the difference: y has an open cup, g has a closed oval, and z has a single hump with a kink at the baseline. Make that kink clear or z can be read as y.
Common lowercase z mistakes
- Starting the loop without the baseline turn.
- A top hump as wide as an n.
- Switching between looped and flat forms in the same text.
Joining z to other letters
The looped z enters with an overcurve and leaves with an upswing from below the baseline, like y. The flat z leaves along the baseline instead.
zz in pizza and puzzle
Two loops in a row. Keep them narrow and the same depth, and let the first exit rise only to the midline before starting the second z.
ze in zero and size
The upswing from the loop must turn into a small e at the midline. Stop climbing early or the e becomes an l.
oz in dozen and frozen
The o bridge runs at the midline into the overcurve of z. Keep the bridge level, then curve down into the hump.
azy in lazy and crazy
A z loop followed straight away by a y loop. Space the letters slightly wider so the two loops do not overlap below the line.
Final z in quiz and buzz
At the end of a word, the exit can stop just after the loop closes. With the flat z, simply end the bottom stroke.

Settling on a z and practicing it
Because z has two accepted forms, the first session is a decision, not a drill.
- Choose your form. Write zoo, size, and lazy once with a looped z and once with a flat z. Keep the version that matches your class model, or the one that stays more readable at your normal speed. Then write a row of capital Z.
- Build the joins. Print a trace worksheet with zz, ze, oz, and az. Check that every loop closes on the baseline and that double z words keep both loops separate.
- Write a full line. Copy "Zoe ate a dozen pizza slices at the zoo." Preview it in the generator, then compare your z with the font's z and note any differences you want to keep.

What varies with cursive Z
More than most letters, z depends on the model you learned. Palmer and some modern programs use other capital Z shapes, and the flat lowercase z is standard in many non-American styles. Each generator font picks one form, so it may not match a looped worksheet. Copyable Unicode script z is a math character that some apps and screen readers treat differently from normal text.
